We set off early from Belfast, as Sean wanted us on the pier for an 08.30 start. A beautiful, sunny, calm morning for a change.  We arrived promptly at 08.15, and sean was already on board Lady Linda waiting for us. We wasted no time at the harbour, and were soon heading off to our chosen marks around Rathlin Island. We headed to the west of the island to a mark known as Bull point, where we hoped to fill our bait box with mackerel. These proved hard to come by, and after 30 minutes or so, we had only a couple of dozen small joey,s to show for our efforts. We did however take a number of coalfish up to 2lbs in weight, and a couple of small codling.
Sean set the anchor at a mark a bit to the east of Bull Point, where we would target spurdogs and possibly skate. We baited our wire trace rigs with our joey mackerel, and calamari squid which we had brought to supplement our bait box. On the day the spurdogs didnt show up. We took nothing on this mark but l.s.d,s, and a few small whiting. Sean suggested a move to a reef to target pollock.
Once again, pollock were the saviour of the day. As soon as we set anchor, our lures were being smashed into by fish after fish, the action being virtually non stop for the remaining 3 hours of our trip. All 6 anglers did well, the average size of pollock being 4lb to 5lb, with a few 6lb plus fish thrown in. The biggest on the day was taken by Frank Montgomery, with a beautifully conditioned fish which pulled the scales to 8lb. This was the pool winner, and the new leader in the Don Ross Shield competition for the years best fish.
This was by far the clubs best days fishing this year, and we will definately be returning next season for further trips with Sean.
