Day 1 - Saturday

The forecast was not too good for this days fishing on board our charter boat, Sailfish, owned by Lesley Bates. With Northerly winds force 4 or 5 predicted it was touch and go whether we could get out to the fishing grounds. Fortunately the weather did not turn out to be too bad and we managed to get out to our marks, east of the Saltee Islands.

We started the day fishing for Mackerel and Launce, and soon had a plentiful supply for bait. Thereafter, some small Pollock were landed and hopes were raised when Alan Buchanan struck into something more substantial. This turned out to be a nice Cod, weighing 5lb 10oz, the heaviest fish of the day!

Guest Angler, Malcolm Campbell, took a pollock of 4lb 12oz and Alan Buchanan took another 2 Pollock weighing 4lb each. Other species caught were Ling, Pouting, Cuckoo Wrasse and Coalfish.

Day 2 - Sunday

The forecast for this day were flat calm seas and bright sunshine which, at least for the start of the day, proved to be the case. Conditions later deteriorated with choppy seas and some heavy rain.

The fishing started off very slow. The skipper, Lesley Bates, radioed various boats also fishing the same area West of the Saltee Islands, none of whom were having much success. As the tide picked up, the fishing improved with numerous Pollock  being caught on various rigs. The most successful technique, however, proved to be a flying collar rig armed with a small side winder eel, sometimes baited with a strip of Sandeel or Mackerel. This sorted out the bigger fish!

The biggest fish of the day was 6lb 8oz Pollock caught by Alan Buchanan. Other species caught were Ling, Wrasse, Pouting, Coalfish and small Codling.
