Great things were expected from this trip, as we had a good weather forecast and tide predicted, and Sean had recorded some nice catches leading up to the trip. As is sometimes the case, results can be disappointing despite the best made plans and so this day proved to be.
First on the target list were mackerel, and they were reasonably plentiful, the 6 anglers having no great trouble filling their bait boxes.
Sean took the boat to a mark South West of Bull Point on Rathlin Island where he set anchor for hopefully a day’s Spurdog fishing. Despite having the best of tide and bait, the fish were just not there, and after 2 hours Sean called lines up to try another spot.
Various marks were tried, with only a few Dogfish and a solitary Cuckoo Wrasse for Bill Bannon, before Sean took the boat to a usually prolific Pollock mark closer to shore in Ballycastle. At last the boys started to take some reasonable catches, with decent Pollock hitting their lures. Bill Bannon taking the days pool with a fish of 6lb 8oz. All too soon it was all over and Sean called it a day. A bit of a disappointing day out, but once again that’s fishing.
1st place Bill Bannon 6lb 8oz Pollock 15 points
2nd place Stevie Montgomery 6lb 4oz Pollock 10 points
3rd place Gerard Girvan 5lb 8oz Pollock 5 points
