We had high hopes for this trip, having had a pretty good days fishing the previous year with Wayne. With our last outing to Downings being cancelled due to bad weather, everyone was keen to get afloat. The weather forecast was doubtful for us, with strong southerly winds predicted, but Wayne suggested a later start, at 14.00 hrs, as the winds were set to decrease in the afternoon.

Unfortunately the forecast proved wrong, and the wind strength actually increased as the day went on.

Our day fishing was very poor indeed. We could not get to our chosen marks due to the weather, and we struggled to find any fish at all. We had a brief flurry of mackerel as a shoal passed under our boat, and we landed about 20 between us. Jimmy Silcock took a real cracker of around 1 lb 8oz, which turned out to be the highlight of our day.

Try as he might, and moving frequently to different marks, Wayne just couldn’t get us onto any fish in the area we had to fish in.

We tried all manner of methods and lures, from spinning to bottom fishing, with a variety of baits, all to no avail, the fish just weren’t there. The only other fish caught were a small codling for Frankie Montgomery, and a tiny dab each for Mark Buchanan and Dan McMahon.

Normally we don’t count mackerel in the club competition, but with a total lack of any sizeable fish, we awarded Jimmy Silcock the pool, and the 15 points for biggest fish of the day.
